School of Music, Art & Design

We are the gateway to most of the courses in the Visual Arts at NMMU. Students who want to study towards a qualification in:

  1. Fine Art
  2. Graphic Design
  3. Photography
  4. Multimedia
  5. Textiles

are required to complete the first year of their studies in the Department of Undergraduate Studies Art & Design Introductory Course before entering their major direction at second year level.

The aim of the course is to introduce entry-level students to a broad range of technical and conceptual skills including:

  • drawing and visualization techniques 
  • a range of 3-Dimensional and 2-Dimensional skills 


  • design
  • painting
  • photography
  • sculpture
  • ceramics

In addition, you will be introduced to Visual Literacy, Theory of Art and Communication.

Introductory Studies is a compulsory first year programme for students wishing to major in:

  • Studio Arts
    (Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking,Sculpture, Stained Glass)
  • Applied Design
    (Graphic Design, Photography, Textile Design)-excluding Fashion Design

Students wishing to enrolin the Fashion Design programme are currently not required to complete the Introductory Studies programme, but may do so if they wish.
